The December Giveaway

>> Friday, December 19, 2008

I had so much fun with the Thanksgiving giveaway I did last month, I’m going to try to do a giveaway every month. For this giveaway I was inspired by the art of Drenched in White and Robin’s use of pink. As I expressed in yesterday’s post, I just love pink. Orange too, but that’s another story. This month I will be sending one lucky winner my Still photograph.

To enter, simply visit my photography shop or my cards & gifts shop and leave a comment on this post letting me know which shop you visited and your favorite item from that shop. Please only comment once.

Because Christmas is just a week away and I know everyone is super busy, I’m running the giveaway for two full weeks. You have until Friday, January 2nd at 10pm (PST) to enter. I will randomly choose one winner Saturday, January 3rd. Please check back to see if you’ve won!

Brighten Up: Drenched in White

"Red Birds"

"Red Hots"
"Three are Free"
I first discovered Robin’s beautiful paintings when she used one of my photographs in a very lovely treasury she created. Honored to be included with other talented artists, I decided to check out Robin’s shop. Robin’s paintings really caught my attention. I love their abstractness (is that even a word?), who cares. And I really love, love, love her use of color. Pink, how I love pink. You must check out Robin’s Etsy shop, Drenched in White. To find out more about Robin check out her blog.

POE Team Member: D.S. Brennan Photography

>> Tuesday, December 16, 2008

The POE Team (AKA Photographers of Etsy) is comprised of very talented photographers all selling their work on Etsy. I’d like to share some of those photographers with you. First up is D.S. Brennan Photography. Diana’s photographs are inspired by nature and her background in environmental science. I like that her images are different. She really photographs what she loves and what inspires her. I’ve noticed Diana’s photography on Etsy and always thought it was beautiful. But it wasn’t until I read her blog that I realized just how talented she is. And how very busy she is! Her blog offers great insight into her life and her photography. You should really check it out. Also, be sure to visit her Etsy shop for more great photography.

Art Fire

>> Wednesday, December 10, 2008

I discovered Art Fire yesterday. I actually found it via Twitter, which I signed up for yesterday. I had to know what all the hype was about. It seems like it may be an easy way to keep in touch with old friends and new ones. I’m bad about keeping up with email. Anyway, while figuring out how to use Twitter I came across a post by Always Amy, which led me to her blog post about Art Fire. I’ve been looking for a new outlet for my photography. I like what they are offering, even though it’s still in its early stages. I’ve noticed a few glitches, but I’m sure they will work it out. I don’t have a lot listed, but check out my new shop at Art Fire.

Pride and Prejudice

>> Tuesday, December 2, 2008

One of my all time favorite books is Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. I found out a few weeks ago via Design*Sponge that Penguin Classics just came out with some beautiful new covers for some of their books. Pride & Prejudice is one of those books. Unfortunately, it is not available in the U.S.

Even though books are usually much better than movie adaptations, I do enjoy watching beloved characters come to life. I think that’s why I have avoided watching the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley. The movie was on TV Sunday night, so I decided to watch it. It was just as I thought. The movie was not very good. I didn’t connect with the characters and Mr. Darcy, played by Matthew Macfadyen, did not have the desired swoon factor. I felt there was a lot of overacting and at times Elizabeth Bennet seemed as childish as her younger sisters.

If you’re looking for a good adaptation of Pride and Prejudice check out the 1995 TV mini-series. It was excellent. Colin Firth was a fantastic Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle the perfect Elizabeth Bennet.

Before & After: Work Station

>> Monday, November 17, 2008

In my previous Before & After post I talked about the lack of style and character in new homes. Another problem we encountered with our new home was upgrades. There are so many upgrades to purchase in a new home. Many would be great to have but just cost too much money. And sometimes it’s past a certain point in the process and they just can’t accommodate. My husband knows this all too well.

We have a small nook in our dining room, which is pretty much useless. We could have opted for the upgrade which would have added cabinets and countertop, but we felt other upgrades where more important. Nicer flooring, countertops, etc. So we were left with an empty space. It is a nice place to hide our kitty food and water but needed something more.

I thought a small work station would be great with a writing surface and a place to hold mail. My husband and I aren’t that handy so my parents helped. My mom had the great idea of using a dining table and cutting it down to fit the space. Crazy, but it worked. My dad and husband cut and installed the table and added a shelf with the left over wood from the table. My mom built the mail boxes. Like I said, I’m not that handy with this type of work. So I took the photos.

Empty nook
Updated nook with desk and mail boxes

Have a great week!

PAM

Today my husband and I started our day with a good breakfast. We went to Bijou CafĂ© in Portland. The food was good and I really liked the atmosphere. It still amazes me how many people there are having breakfast at 10am on a weekday. It is very rare for my husband and I to go to breakfast during the week. Or to go out to breakfast at all. We just don’t do it very often. So it was a real treat to get a good omelet and potatoes. I love potatoes.

After breakfast we went over to the Portland Art Museum to check out the photography exhibit Wild Beauty: Photographs of the Columbia River Gorge, 1867-1957. It’s a really great exhibit if you’re in Portland. We both really enjoyed it.

Have a great weekend!

Before & After: Guest Room

>> Monday, November 3, 2008

Most new homes usually don’t have much style or character. This was true with our new home. While we liked the layout, the taupe walls just sucked the life out of me. Decorating our home has been a slow process since we moved in a few years ago. Although it’s been slow, I’m happy with what we have accomplished so far. I would like to share some of our before and after photos.
Before: The spare bedroom started as a place to dump boxes and other items that we didn’t have a place for. We really wanted a comfortable place for out-of-town guests to stay.

After: With the help of my mother, it is now a comfortable and stylish retreat.

I eventually want to add vertical stripes to the wall opposite the dresser. Like this:

I would love to see some of your before & after photos. Have a great week.

Autumn's Splendor

I'm back from my trip to Arizona. I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the desert and I’m looking forward to visiting Arizona again. I will be sharing some of my photographs with you in the coming weeks.

While I was away, my husband snapped some photos of the fall colors here in the Willamette Valley. It is amazing how quickly the color changed in the short time I was gone. Here are a couple of his photographs….

My uncle, who is also a photographer, took some beautiful photographs of the fall color in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Here’s a peak at one of his new photos. You can see more of his photographs from the UP here. For more information, check out Blogging About Photography.

Popina Swimwear

>> Wednesday, October 15, 2008

One of the great things about living in Portland is all of the lovely shops. I’m still somewhat new to Portland but it seems that every time I go into a new neighborhood (new to me) I find wonderful shops. Just two weeks ago I was searching for a new bathing suit for an overnight trip to the Bonneville Resort. I really wanted to swim in the pool. As many of you know, most of the large retailers do not sell suits in the store this time of year. So I ordered a suit online, I should have known better. Needless to say it didn’t fit and I had to take it back. By this time I was desperate for a suit and I did an online search for swim shops in the area. Only one came up in the search, Popina Swimwear.

I stopped by the store the very next day and was greeted by Pamela Levenson, the owner and designer of Popina Swimwear. Pamela helped me pick out a lot of great suits to try on. I was able to mix and match my suit. I purchased a swim top by Swim Systems and matched it to Retro Boy Shorts designed by Pamela. I walked out of the store with a great suit that I actually felt very comfortable and confident in!

If you’re ever in the area stop by Popina. You’ll find everything you need including flip flops, sunglasses and bathing suit cover-ups. I found some very cute bags that were hard to resist. You can find more information at Popina Swimwear.

Bottom Line: Cute suits and great customer service!

About Me

I view the world as if I’m looking through the lens of a camera. I see photographs everywhere. I’m inspired by the simple and ordinary in our everyday lives. I see beauty in a pear and in the details of an old-fashioned door knob. Photography is my passion and I want to help people see the simple splendor that surrounds us.
