Beaverton City Hall Show

The Tualatin Art Splash is this weekend! There will be over fifty artists displaying works in oils, acrylics, photography, ceramics, glassware, jewelry and more. The show will take place under a large tent alongside the Commons Lake in Tualatin.

I’ve been working hard getting my photography ready for the show and I can’t wait for it to start. I’ll have several framed pieces, large and small, available for sale, as well as matted prints, note cards and my 2011 desktop calendar.

I’ve been dreaming of Paris for as long as I can remember. There is so much to love. The Eiffel Tower, of course, I’ve had my Target Eiffel Tower lamp for years. But it’s more than just that. It’s the cobblestone streets, sidewalk cafes, art and architecture. Oh, the photos I could take. I dream of it in black & white, it makes it even more romantic.

I’ve set goals for myself, I’ll go by a certain age…time has passed. But I think it’s closer than it ever has been; there are talks of the next big purchase and passports. Doesn’t writing down your goals help you achieve them? Maybe this will help.

I was reading the book Exhibiting Photography by Shirley Read last night and I came across this quote by David LaChapelle. I just really appreciated it and it hit home for me. I’ve had moments when I’m frustrated and tired, putting in a ton of work and seeing little result. But I just remember, I’m doing something I love, taking photographs I love and as much as I hope for something more I’m not going to change to make someone else happy.

Historic Deepwood Estate

Over the weekend I was going through my photos from the Historic Deepwood Estate in Salem, Oregon. I always go back through my photos months after I shoot them to see if I have missed anything and as time passes I tend to see my images with a new perspective. This time around I began to see a story unfold in several of the photographs.

This is kind of a delayed post. I wanted to post this on Friday, but I had a wedding to go to in Seattle and family in town, so I'm just now getting to it. Also, I spent Monday in Cannon Beach. Photos coming soon!

I discovered TTV or Through the Viewfinder photography a few years ago and loved it. After spending some time researching how to do TTV and what kind of camera to use, I purchased my first camera through ebay, an Argus 75. Once it arrived, I coaxed my husband into assembling a “contraption” to block the light out with cereal boxes. We spent a whole afternoon driving around town and taking photos. I was hooked.

A proud moment for me came when some of those first photos were accepted into the Rental Sales Gallery at the Portland Art Museum. The photos are now up on the PAM website!

Logan Mat Cutter

Another one of my favorite tools is my Logan 450 Mat Cutter. I haven’t used it in a while because I haven’t been doing as many shows, but it’s one of my must haves. The sizes of my photos aren’t always a standard size, so it’s nice to cut my own mats to fit my photographs. I have been creating my photographs in standards sizes recently because it does make it a lot easier for framing. Lately I have been cutting larger size mats and my mat cutter doesn’t accommodate bigger sizes. A new mat cutter has been on my wish list for a while.

Over the years I’ve learned that it’s a good idea to have your art matted if you’re going to be selling it to the public. I have been cutting my own mats for many years, but it is always a little nerve racking when you try it for the first time or if you haven’t done it in awhile. Do your research and find the mat cutter that will work best for you. You can purchase large sheets of mat board at your local art store and then cut it down to the size you need. If you’re not very good with math (I’m not at all!), get ready to learn about fractions and decimals. You’ll be doing a lot of measuring. I discovered a great website to help me along. And remember practice, practice, practice!

Adobe Photoshop

After I take my photographs, I load everything on the computer. I pick out my favorites and do some minor work in Photoshop:

Color correct
Sharpen
Crop – I don’t crop my photos very often. I like to frame my subject in the camera. Sometimes even though I framed my subject in the camera, it just looks better cropped.
Convert to black and white – I don’t do this a lot either, but sometimes a photograph just has more pop in black and white. It’s not that I don’t love black & white, I kind of the let the photograph speak to me. If it’s right I’ll do it.

I took a few digital photography classes in college, so that’s how I got my start with Photoshop. A lot of it is just playing around and trying new things. The internet is a great source, if I have questions on how to do things. I also love Scott Kelby’s book The Photoshop CS2 Book. I haven’t used everything out of the book, but there are about 5 or 6 great tips that I use every time I process a photo in Photoshop. Definitely check it out!

Digital Canon Rebel XT

I was asked at an art show last summer what kind of camera I used. I am embarrassed to admit I didn’t know. I did know it was a Canon Rebel, but with the new models and similar names (XS, XSi, T1i – I know now because I looked it up) it was confusing and quite honestly I didn’t care that much. I purchased the camera because my uncle is into photography too and he does his research. I’m not much into research and the technicalities of the equipment I use. Is it easy to use? Check. Does it take nice photographs? Check. Can I adjust f-stops, shutter speed, ISO, etc? Check. And I only have one lens for the camera, the 18-55mm kit lens that the camera came with.

My First Photographs

My first photographs weren’t great. In fact, looking back, they were pretty awful. But I loved it and kept at it. Eventually, I found my style and mastered the camera (sort of, there’s always something to learn). Have a great weekend!

My First Camera

I didn’t have a camera of my own when I first started my photography class. Luckily, my father had some interest in photography and loaned me his Pentax K-1000. I love that camera and was devastated when it broke during one of my classes. I needed to have a camera to finish the class and instead of having it repaired, we decided it would be better to buy a new camera. I purchased a Canon Rebel. While the Rebel was a good camera, it just wasn’t the same. I eventually got my own Pentax K-1000 and my father had his repaired.

The K-1000 is a great camera and perfect for someone just starting out. It’s a manual camera, so you have to learn how to set the aperture and shutter speed. I now shoot with a digital camera and I still shoot on manual. I have no idea how to use any of the other settings on my camera.

My History with Photography

This is a week of firsts…first class, first camera, first photos.

I’ve been taking pictures off and on for over 10 years. After you have been doing something for so long, you start to think, how did I get here? Well, this is how my love of photography started…

It was my second semester at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and I was starting to meet friends. One of my new friends, Ann*, decided to take a beginning black & white photography class and I decided to join her. Photography wasn’t something that I knew much about, but I thought it sounded interesting and fun. After developing my first roll of film in that black & white darkroom, I was hooked even though my first photos weren’t very good.

After the semester was over, I realized how much I was going to miss photography. The university didn’t offer that many photography classes and I realized I wasn’t ready to be at the university so I enrolled at Oakland Community College**. The community college had a full program and numerous classes. I took every class they offered in photography and eventually earned an associate’s degree in photography.

I highly recommend the photography program at Oakland Community College. I really enjoyed my time there and met a lot of great people.

*Ann and I lost touch after I left the university, but I’m so thankful she took that class.

**I did return to Oakland University where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree with a major in general studies and a minor in art history.

What to expect from the new Buttons & Pears – Part One

Yesterday I talked about the new direction for Buttons & Pears. Today I’ll give you more details on what I have planned for the blog. I’ll start next week by sharing my discovery of photography and how I got started. I’m going to try and dig up my first photograph from my very first class. I still have every negative and every photo, even if they weren’t very good.

Here are a few of the categories I’ve come up with:

My Inspiration: This is a big one. Inspiration is a large part of creation and comes in many different forms.

Music: I’ll share which artists and songs inspire me. I believe there is a strong connection between what I’m listening to and how my photographs look. It’s not just while shooting the photographs, but in the processing as well.

Other artists: I’m always inspired by other artists. I’ll share artist’s work that I love and I’ll also bring back Flickr Inspiration. There are so many great images on Flickr and I love playing curator. So be on the lookout for Flickr mosaics.

Objects around my home: There are so many things that inspire me and a lot of the time it’s something in my home. So I’ll share what those things are and how they are transformed into a fine art photograph.

I’ll pick back up tomorrow with a list of the other categories.

Mission Statement – A New Direction for Buttons & Pears

Over the last few months I have lost focus with Buttons & Pears (if I ever had it in the first place). That loss of focus really got me thinking about what I want to share and what I hope to get from Buttons & Pears. Recently, I discovered Tara Gentile’s e-book 52 Weeks of Blogging Your Passion. I decided to give it a try and it has really helped me create a focus and mission for the blog.

My mission for Buttons & Pears:

Buttons & Pears is an insight into my life as an aspiring fine art photographer. I’ll take a look back at the past and explore how I unexpectedly found my passion for photography and how I’ve evolved as a photographer. I’ll share my inspirations, goals, successes and failures. Through all of this I hope readers will have a better understanding of how I come up with my ideas and the process I use to create photographs. I also hope to inspire others to create, take chances and work towards their goals.

Of course, this will probably change and grow, just as I’ll change and grow as a person and an artist.

This week I’ll talk about my plans for the blog and what you can expect in the coming weeks. I’ve been working hard and have come up with some great ideas that I can’t wait to share with you. I hope you’ll stop by again soon!

Spring Opening at The Rental Sales Gallery

This photograph was actually taken back in August. I was going through my older photos (most of which I have hardly looked at), found this one and thought it had some potential*. I started layering with another photo (taken in September) and a texture I photographed. I really like the outcome and would like to try the effect with other photos taken from the Dahlia Farm.

*I really like the way the photo looked without the layers, but the sky was too washed out.

I spent a majority of my Saturday afternoon taking photographs. I had such a great time setting up shots and making a mess of my already disastrous studio. I love how easy it is to take some photos and then plug my CF card right into my computer to see how they turned out. Back and forth all afternoon, shoot, edit, shoot, edit.

Here is one of my Saturday afternoon treasures. I hope to keep up the momentum and excitement of my photo shoots and make them a weekly occurrence, posting the fruits of my labor here. Be sure to stop by again tomorrow, I have a lot of photographs to share.

BLUE: An Exhibition of Photographs about a Color

If you live near Middlebury, Vermont be sure to check out the latest exhibition, BLUE: An Exhibition of Photographs about a Color. My Motel is featured in the show. It is quite an honor to be a part of the show. 167 photographers submitted work for a total of 841 photographs. Only 40 of the 841 photographs are exhibited on the walls of the PhotoPlace Gallery.

A few weeks ago we made a trip to the Historic Deepwood Estate in Salem for an antique show. The Estate includes a beautiful Queen Anne Victorian home surrounded by 4 acres of lovely gardens. Working full time and finding time (and energy) to work on my passion (photography) has been a losing battle. I have been able to start some projects, although my to-do list is growing and my accomplished list is well, at a standstill.

What I’ve been working on:

I’m working with a local printer to have some new greeting cards printed. I can’t wait to pick them up. Hopefully, I’ll be listing them in my shop soon.

I have a new 2010 calendar in the works. I’m about half way there; hopefully I will have it completed soon.

As you can see, I’m updating my blog. It’s something that’s been on my mind for a while. Hopefully, I can keep it up.

What I’ve been thinking about:

Purchasing a button machine from American Button Machines. I would like to make pocket mirrors and magnets with my photos on them. Plus, it just looks like fun.

New photos. I have so many ideas swimming around.

A finished booth display for my shows. I’ve been slowly updating my display and it’s almost there.

Doing more shows at coffee shops, restaurants, galleries, etc. I’ve been on a four month break and I would really like to get back into it.

Cleaning my studio…

After reading what I just wrote… I realize that I am very hopeful about my projects. Now if I can just turn hope into action.

Sherwood Saturday Market

Saturday, June 6th marked our third Saturday at the Sherwood Saturday Market. I really enjoy the Sherwood Market, not only because it’s close to home, but I love Old Town Sherwood. It’s very quaint and I would love to spend more time walking around and stopping in at the cute little shops.

Since I started participating in outdoor markets last year my booth has evolved. I finally feel like things are getting close to the way I want them. With the help of my parents, I now have a large bin to display all of my matted prints. It also holds my framed prints and other accessories for my booth, making it easy to transport from the car to our booth location. My mom and dad worked hard to have it ready for my first market on May 2. My dad shipped it from Michigan and we just had to put it together when it arrived.

My mom created two custom table covers. Saturday was my first time using them; they looked beautiful and made my booth look more professional. Here are some snapshots from the last few markets.

I’m back from a month long hiatus. I didn’t intend to take such a long break, but I started working full time again and time just slipped away from me. I’m feeling more settled into my new schedule and want to get back into regular postings.

I’ll start by getting you caught up on what’s been happening in the studio this month. I applied for and had 5 of my photographs accepted into the Portland Art Museum’s Rental Sales Gallery. I’m very excited about this. The New Gallery Members Show will be on Friday, June 19th from 5pm – 8pm. Stop by and check it out if you're in the Portland area. You can visit the Portland Art Museum’s website for more information.

I’ll be at the Sherwood Saturday Market on June 6th from 9am – 1pm and Art in the Plaza at Millennium Plaza Park in Lake Oswego on Sunday August 16th from 10am – 3pm.

From the Studio

It’s going to be a busy week in the studio. I have two events this week. The first is a solo show at the Chehalem Downtown Tasting Room in Newberg. If you’re in the Portland area, stop by for the opening reception. It’s on Friday, May 1st from 5pm-9pm. Snack on some complimentary appetizers and enjoy some Chehalem wines. If you can’t make if for the opening reception, the show will be up for the month of May.

On Saturday, May 2nd I will be at the Sherwood Saturday Market. It’s the first market of the season and there will be some great vendors selling plants, produce, art and other goodies. The market runs from 9am – 1pm. If you can’t make it on Saturday I will be at the market at least one Saturday a month. Just check the right column of my blog for my exhibition and show listings.

Disclaimer: Okay, so I know I featured a jewelry artist last week, but I was so excited when I found these necklaces I just had to post them today.

I’ve been on the lookout for a very simple, everyday wear kind of necklace. And I was very excited to find MiniCyn on the front page of Etsy. After checking out MiniCyn I noticed a link to their other shop WontonLove. I just love the Spotty Glitter and All that Glitter necklaces. I am a circle girl and a silver lover, but the gold just really appeals to me. These necklaces are on my must have list.

I just recently found Ruche while visiting the Paper n Stitch blog. Let me just say, I have really been missing out. Not only do they have beautiful, dreamy clothing they also carry some super cute shoes. On Friday we drove down to Eugene to drop off three of my photographs that have been accepted into the University of Oregon’s 2009 Pacific Northwest Art Annual. Click here to learn more about the Art Annual.

Eugene is about 2 hours away from our home so we decided to make it an overnight trip and do some exploring. On Friday, after dropping off my photographs, we drove out to Florence. Florence is a quaint, little town on the Oregon coast. We walked around town and I managed to get a few photographs before the rain started up again. It had been raining most of the day with an occasional glimpse of the sun.

On the way back to Eugene we stopped at an old, rundown gas station and I was able to take photos there until it started raining again. On Saturday, we headed south to Cottage Grove and drove the covered bridge tour. I’ll have more photos from the gas station and the covered bridge tour soon.

I love everything about photography. I collect cameras, take A LOT of photographs and when I’m not taking photographs, I’m thinking of new subject matter to photograph. I like to travel places just to take pictures. I sometimes forget to enjoy myself, because I’m so caught up in ‘getting the shot’. You could call photography my obsession. Just ask my husband, he’ll tell you.

So when I found these great camera necklaces on Etsy, I knew I had to have one or maybe two.

Fingerless Gloves

When I take pictures I like to have control over everything. I use my camera manually, meaning I focus the camera myself and I choose what F-Stop and shutter speed to use to get my desired effect. This can be hard to do when you’re outside and its 30 degrees. Gloves aren’t really an option when I’m trying to push buttons, it just doesn’t work. I was out taking pictures one cold morning and my hands were getting so numb I had a hard time pushing the buttons to change the settings on my camera.

That’s when I discovered fingerless gloves. Now I’ve seen them before, but I always wondered why anyone would want fingerless gloves. Then I had my A-ha moment. Fingerless gloves would be great for taking pictures on cold days. I did some searching on Etsy and found some great options. These are perfect for photos on a cold day.

I’ve decided to have a sale in my Etsy shop to make room for some new photographs. I also plan on listing some new cards and postcards in the near future. The photographs that are on sale are photos that I took several years ago and I feel it’s time for their retirement. These items will no longer be available in my Etsy shop, but they may be viewed on my personal website at melissalund.net.

Speaking of my website. I finally finished the design and I feel really good about it. There may be some minor tweaks, but no major changes.

Last week we met up with some friends to celebrate a birthday at Alu Wine Bar & Lounge in Portland. We were the first to arrive, so we sat at the bar and had a drink. I’ve been working on a new logo to go with my new website. I’ve come up with a couple different ideas, but can’t decide. These logos are still a bit rough and need some polishing, but they’re a good representation of what I'm working on. Which variation of the logo do you like best?

She and Him

So I love my Sirius Radio. But what I really love is the 60s on 6 channel. That’s really all I listen to when I’m in my studio or in my car. I’ve had Sirius for a few years and I really didn’t even consider getting it until my husband decided to get it for my birthday a few years ago. Because of Sirius I have become obsessed with listening to sixties music. It’s become so bad that I don’t even know what’s happening in modern music. Who is Katy Perry? I really have no clue.

While reading Decor8 yesterday I came across a post that mentioned Zooey Deschanel and her music. Zooey Deschanel can sing? Well, I don’t know much about Zooey Deschanel. The first time I can remember seeing her was in Tin Man. I then realized she had been in others movies I’ve seen, I just didn’t know who she was.

So what does Sirius Radio and Zooey Deschanel have in common? Not much really, except that I love sixties music and She & Him has a sixties vibe. Very fun and easy to sing along with. There’s nothing that can put me in a better mood than sixties music and sunshine!

Ode to the Camera

I’m starting to accumulate a small collection of cameras. I have ten, yes 10, cameras. I’m not including the one on my phone, which I just don’t use. I have standards. Some are old; many have sentimental value and a few I don’t even use. The Pentax K 1000 was my first camera and first love. It is my father’s camera and I used it for my first photography classes. It broke and so I had to get another camera. I purchased a Canon Rebel. Not quite the same as the K 1000 so I purchased a K 1000 on Ebay. Still not quite the same, but a very good camera. My father’s K 1000 was eventually fixed. Next up, my parent’s Polaroid Land Camera. I’m not sure if it was given to me or if I just kind of “borrowed” it. I’ve used it a few times, but it mostly hangs out on my shelf.

A few years ago I decided to make the switch to digital and I purchased a Rebel XT. I still miss film and the darkroom, but digital was just more practical and cost effective. Plus, it offers that instant gratification that my photography instructor was always talking about. Actually, he was talking about the lack of instant gratification that comes with film. About a year ago my grandmother gave me her No. 2A Brownie. I can’t do too much with it, but it looks great sitting on my shelf. Last year I received a Digital Elph from my husband, so that I will always have a camera with me.

Several months ago I purchased an Argus 75 on Ebay to try TTV photography. I love it. I love it so much that for Christmas this year my mother sent me a Duaflex. She even made me a TTV contraption, which looks something like this. Each camera has its own characteristics, its own dust and scratches. Actually, this year I hit the camera jackpot. My husband bought me a Holga, which I’ve wanted to test out for years. I really like the idea of not having to fuss with the camera too much. The Holga doesn’t really offer much control and I’ve heard it can leak light. For some a problem, for me, this offers endless artistic possibilities. And last but not least, my mother-in-law sent me her Kodak No. 1 Diomatic (Please correct me if I'm wrong). I don’t know much about the camera; it’s a lot different from my other cameras. And it looks great on my shelf.

The POE Team (AKA Photographers of Etsy) is comprised of very talented photographers all selling their work on Etsy. I’d like to share some of those photographers with you. First up is D.S. Brennan Photography. Diana’s photographs are inspired by nature and her background in environmental science. I like that her images are different. She really photographs what she loves and what inspires her. I’ve noticed Diana’s photography on Etsy and always thought it was beautiful. Art Fire

I discovered Art Fire yesterday. I actually found it via Twitter, which I signed up for yesterday. I had to know what all the hype was about. It seems like it may be an easy way to keep in touch with old friends and new ones. I’m bad about keeping up with email. Anyway, while figuring out how to use Twitter I came across a post by Always Amy, which led me to her blog post about Art Fire. I’ve been looking for a new outlet for my photography. I like what they are offering, even though it’s still in its early stages. I’ve noticed a few glitches, but I’m sure they will work it out. I don’t have a lot listed, but check out my new shop at Art Fire.
